Sunset in Nauvoo

Last Updated 8/19/2026Posted in Slow Down Experiences

Unwind at the end of the day with a peaceful sunset over the Mississippi River in Nauvoo. This slow, scenic experience invites you to pause, take in sweeping river views, and enjoy one of Nauvoo’s most relaxing and memorable moments—perfect for couples, solo travelers, or anyone looking to simply slow down and soak it all in.

Nauvoo has the most amazing sunsets and for locals, sunset is an event. Plan to slow down and relax in the evening. If you check the time of sunset plan to start watching the colors change about thirty minutes before and for another thirty minutes after. The golden hour is the hour before sunset and the blue hour is the hour after sunset. A camera can detect the color changes that come with sunset both the hour before and after, but the colors are most noticeable in the thirty minutes before and after.

One of the most popular spots for sunset watching is on the bluff at the foot of the Nauvoo Temple. The benches around the statues of Joseph and Hyrum Smith on their horses become a place to sit and slow down. If you are looking for a conversation many of those gathered here will pause for a chat and enjoy the colors. There is also space to just sit and reflect. Bring a blanket and enjoy the large grassy lawn and the incredible view of the Mississippi River.

The Nauvoo Riverwalk where Parley Street meets the Mississippi River is another favorite spot. The concrete platform with benches at the water's edge is a quiet place to sit and reflect. Many also walk along the Riverwalk and enjoy the many birds that frequent the banks of the river. The peaceful sound of the waves and the changing colors of the sunset are amazingly relaxing.

Lake Horton in the Nauvoo State Park is a quiet and secluded getaway with spectacular views. One of Nauvoo's hidden gems, you will find this lake in the middle of the State Park. With a dock and small beach this spot is great for fishing and kayaking. A hiking trails around the lake are also a great way to get away from the world and find your peace.

Nauvoo is full of breathtaking sunset spots. The sweeping views from the bluff looking west towards the sunset make anywhere in Nauvoo a great spot. Taking time to slow down and relax at the end of your day is one of the most memorable things about spending time in Nauvoo.
