Nauvoo has long been a place of inspiration, and today it continues to nurture creativity through its vibrant art scene. From handcrafted quilts to thought-provoking sculptures and paintings, art is woven into the fabric of the town. This artist itinerary highlights some of Nauvoo’s most creative spaces, including a quilt shop filled with beautiful fabrics, a peaceful statue garden, a local art gallery showcasing regional talent, and community art associations that keep the spirit of creativity alive. Whether you’re an artist yourself or simply someone who loves to experience art, Nauvoo offers plenty to spark your imagination.

Nauvoo Emporium Quilts and More

Step into the Nauvoo Emporium, a cozy shop where quilts are more than just blankets—they’re works of art. Browse vibrant fabrics, patterns, and handmade pieces that showcase both tradition and creativity. A little bit of something for any fiber arts enthusiast including cross stitch, felting, and more. You will be inspired by all the projects and Nauvoo themed kits and fabric prints.

Monument to Women Memorial Garden

Wander through the Women's Garden, a two acre peaceful outdoor garden where twelve sculptures depict phases of a woman's life in bronze. Sculpted by Dennis Smith and Florence Hansen, these life size statues depict women in various stages of life. This quiet garden blends nature and art, offering a perfect spot for reflection and inspiration.

Lane Newberry Art

Stop at the art gallery on the third floor of the Cultural Hall, and then head over to the Hotel Nauvoo, where the elegant Nauvoo Room is dedicated to the late artist and historian Lane K. Newberry. A Nauvoo native with deep pioneer and Mormon roots, Newberry devoted much of his life to painting the historic places of Illinois—including countless scenes of Nauvoo as they appeared during and after the days of early settlement. His inspiring collection, numbering over 100 canvases, preserved these cherished landmarks before time and decay could claim them. Inside the Nauvoo Room, guests are surrounded by his detailed depictions of local sites, blending historic reverence with artistic vision—making it a deeply evocative stop for art lovers and history buffs alike.

Nauvoo Glassworks

McCarty Art & Design Sign Museum

McCarty Art & Design has been in business since 1972. John McCarty has created some of the most memorable signs in Nauvoo following in the footsteps of Nauvoo sign makers of the past. The museum in the shop highlights signs from Nauvoo businesses of days gone by.

William Weeks Home

Step inside the home of William Weeks, the talented architect of the original Nauvoo Temple. His residence offers a glimpse into the life and work of a man whose vision shaped one of Nauvoo’s most iconic landmarks. As part of the artist tour, the home highlights Weeks’s skill in design and craftsmanship, reflecting both his artistic eye and his role in Nauvoo’s rich architectural history.

Art Galleries

Nauvoo’s art scene isn’t limited to museums — it also thrives in local shops and historic spaces. At Zion’s Mercantile, visitors can discover handcrafted goods and creative pieces made by local artisans, while the Quarry House Gallery offers a beautifully curated selection of art inside one of Nauvoo’s historic stone buildings. Together, these stops highlight the unique blend of history and creativity that defines Nauvoo’s artistic spirit.

Fort Madison Area Art Association

The Fort Madison Area Art Association is a vibrant hub for creativity, offering rotating exhibits of local and regional artists, a member gallery, and monthly pop-up shows that highlight unique voices. With hands-on art classes and workshops for all ages, two working studios, and welcoming spaces for collaboration, the Association inspires both learning and expression. Community events like Artist Hub Night, family art activities, and signature fundraisers—including Artistry After Dark, Trivia Night, Brews & Brushes, and the Riverfront Art Festival—make it a lively gathering place where art and community come together.

Burlington Art Association

Located just down the river from Nauvoo, the Burlington Area Art Center is a hub for creativity and culture. Visitors can enjoy rotating exhibits featuring regional artists, browse galleries filled with paintings, photography, and sculpture, and even take part in workshops or special events. The Center is also home to community programs that bring people and art together, making it a vibrant stop for anyone who wants to experience the wider artistic spirit of the Mississippi River region.

Scenic Spots

Nauvoo has been a place that has been the subject of paintings and photographs since the 1830's. Today is no different and there are no shortage of spots that will catch an artists eye. From sunset watching from the steps of the temple to the Mississippi River shoreline, there are beautiful scenic spots around every corner.
