Few wildlife experiences capture the imagination quite like seeing a bald eagle in the wild. In Nauvoo, these iconic birds are not a rare sight but a year-round presence, drawn to the Mississippi River’s open water, abundant fish, and tall riverside trees. For visitors and residents alike, bald eagles have become a powerful symbol of Nauvoo’s natural landscape.

Why Bald Eagles Choose Nauvoo

Bald eagles thrive where large bodies of water meet undisturbed shoreline and mature trees—conditions that Nauvoo offers in abundance. The Mississippi River provides a reliable food source, while the surrounding bluffs and wooded riverbanks supply ideal nesting and perching locations. During colder months, open water along the river attracts even more eagles as nearby waterways freeze, concentrating birds in visible areas.

The Parley Street Nesting Pair

One of Nauvoo’s most well-known eagle viewing locations is at the end of Parley Street, where a nesting pair of bald eagles can often be observed overlooking the river. Nesting activity typically begins in late winter, with adults repairing their nest, guarding territory, and taking turns hunting. Watching the pair soar overhead or return to the nest with fish is an unforgettable experience and a highlight for many birdwatchers.

Visitors are encouraged to observe from a respectful distance, allowing the eagles to continue their natural behaviors without disturbance. The nest can be easily seen from the Riverwalk viewing platform and a birdwatching scope is provided making viewing the eagles easy for everyone.

Fishing Along the Mississippi River

The Mississippi River plays a central role in eagle activity throughout the year. Bald eagles are often seen fishing from the air, swooping down to snatch fish from the water’s surface. They also perch patiently in tall trees, scanning the river below. During winter, when fish are concentrated in open water, eagles become especially active and easier to spot. In addition to hunting, eagles may be seen resting along sandbars or engaging in dramatic aerial interactions as they defend territory or chase competitors.

Year-Round Viewing Opportunities

While bald eagles are present in Nauvoo throughout the year, each season offers a slightly different experience:

  • Winter: Peak viewing season, with multiple eagles gathering along open water.

  • Late Winter & Early Spring: Nest building and nesting activity at Parley Street.

  • Summer: Fewer birds, but regular sightings of adults and occasionally juveniles.

  • Fall: Increasing activity as migrating eagles return to the river corridor.

No matter the season, the Mississippi River remains the best place to watch for eagle activity.
