Firefly Watching in Nauvoo

Some of the most magical moments in Nauvoo happen after the sun goes down.

Begin your evening just before dusk. As the light starts to fade, make your way to a quiet outdoor space—somewhere with open grass, trees, or along the edges of town where it feels a little more still. The transition from day to night is part of the experience. The best times of year to look for fireflies is during June and July.
Good spots to settle in include the edges of Nauvoo State Park, in front of the Nauvoo Temple, the riverfront near the Mississippi River at the end of Parley Street, or a quiet corner near the Nauvoo Historic District where the lights are softer and the sky feels a little bigger.
The best times to watch fireflies are at dusk just as the sun goes down between 6 and 9 pm. As darkness deepens, watch closely. At first, it may just be one or two flickers. Then another. And another. Before long, the air begins to glow with small, quiet flashes—fireflies moving through the trees and across the grass like tiny sparks.

There’s nothing you need to do here. No schedule to follow. Just sit, walk slowly, or lie back and take it in. If you’re with family, let kids gently chase the fireflies (and release them again). If you’re with someone special, it’s the kind of setting that doesn’t need much conversation. Stay as long as you’d like. The show comes and goes in waves, never quite the same twice. Lay back and watch the stars while you wait.

Bring a light blanket, avoid bright lights, and give your eyes time to adjust. The darker it gets, the more you’ll see. In Nauvoo, even the evenings have a way of slowing you down—just enough to notice something you might have otherwise missed.
